On Monday, it was my pleasure to welcome Dr Duncan Mackinnon and Meghan Campbell from Bega Valley Medical Centre to Parliament House to talk to my Federal Parliamentary colleagues about their successful ‘Teen Clinic’ program.

One of my priorities as the Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Suicide Prevention is to ensure that there are adequate suicide prevention programs for people in rural and regional Australia.

‘Teen Clinic’, which operates out of the Bega Medical Practice, is a nurse led program that allows young people to drop into the clinic two afternoons a week and discuss areas of concern with the nurse.

The program has demonstrated that early access and intervention plays an important role in preventing youth suicides.

It was important for me to familiarise other politicians with the ‘Teen Clinic’ model because it is a financially viable program that accommodates the varied needs of teenagers and it could easily be replicated across the country.

I was also very proud to showcase some of the wonderful work that is happening right here in Eden-Monaro to our Federal Parliamentarians, which offers the potential to shape policy development in a bipartisan way.

We'll Put People First.
